Photography by Pema

Each frame, a portal to peace, awaits.
A pause, a breath, a tranquil state.
Through the lens, silent beauty sings.
To Zen, and the ageless calm it brings.

A monk re-named me Pema
I was born in the US, and marriage to a Brit took me to England. Happiness was not everlasting, as my husband died from cancer. Amidst grief’s chaotic and heavy weight, I found consolation and equilibrium in meditation’s embrace. A monk re-named me Pema, as like a lotus flower, I emerged from the mucky depths of sorrow and opened to the possibilities of happiness and a new life.

Like many people, I treasure old family photos. A photograph can hold powerful memories from the past. However, I have found more joy in looking forward, and in creating new memories through a camera’s lens. I offer my photographs as a moment for you to pause, enjoy the present moment and feel ageless calm.

Some of the artists who have influenced my photographic choices include the American painter Georgia O'Keeffe and the 20th century photographers Edward Weston and Eliot Porter.

My love of photography began in my teenage years, when a roll of film offered only 24 or 36 frames. In our family basement I had a small space next to the washing machine ... a simple “dark room” where I developed film and printed black & white photographs. It was always a delight to watch an image emerge on paper, as if by magic. Now with digital cameras, I still feel that there is magic and power in photographs. And the monk was right, I have found happiness with a wonderful husband and a new life in Portugal.
